Guard Over My Mouth

Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. (Psalm 141:3)

Thought: Why did David, a man after God’s own heart, pray this prayer? I believe David knew the importance of his words. In the gospels we read, “Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words”; the people who did not like Jesus wanted to trap Jesus with his own words but, of course, Jesus never fell prey to their cunning ways. In the same way, the enemy of our soul will every day provoke us to say things that are contrary to the word of God and try and trap us but let us lean on the Lord’s grace to protect us from saying anything that can strengthen the plans of the enemy against us. Let the Lord guard our mouths at all times. Let the words of our mouth only reinforce and strengthen the plans and purposes of God concerning our lives.

Prayer: Father, we know that our mouths have the power of life and death but still at times we say things that are not pleasing to You and are contrary to Your word and Your thoughts. Father, I pray that today and all the days of my life You will put a guard over my mouth and You will keep me from saying anything that is contrary to Your word. Father, I thank You that with You standing guard over my mouth, my words will always bring You great pleasure and will always agree with Your plans and Your purposes. I thank You for hearing my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
