Focusing our eyes

The hearing ear and the seeing eye, The Lord has made them both. Proverbs 20:12

One characteristic of the human eye is this: our eyes do not have the ability to focus on more than one thing at a time. That is how the Lord created our eyes and it is for a reason. This ability of eyes to focus on only one thing is the reason our eyes play a very key role in our walk of faith. Abraham’s  inheriting the land was not just based on God’s promise to him but was also dependent on how much Abraham could see: “I am giving all this land, as far as you can see, to you and your descendants as a permanent possession” (Genesis 13:15). The Bible makes it very clear that the quality of our life is based on the health of our eyes: “But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness” (Matthew 6:23).

Just as our eyes play a key role in the area of inheriting our promises and in the quality of our spiritual health, our eyes also play a key role in the area of our deliverance from unpleasant situations and circumstances. Always remember it is the Lord’s will for us to walk in deliverance from all the plans of the enemy; that is why He taught us to pray “deliver us from evil” (Matthew 6:13). One story of the Lord’s great deliverance of His people is found in 2 Chronicles 20: Jehoshaphat was surrounded and overwhelmed by a foreign army. The situation looked hopeless and defeat seemed certain. 2 Chronicles 20:12 records the last line of Jehoshaphat’s cry for help: “…but our eyes are upon thee”. Verse 13 records that they all continued in that position: “All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood there before the LORD”. What followed? The Lord showed up and counsel of the Lord brought about a great deliverance. What we focus our eyes on will always be an indication of what we have placed our trust in. May our eyes always behold the Lord.

Declaration: This week I will focus my eyes on the Lord and on His promises for me. As I position my eyes on Christ, I will walk in continuous victory.

Scripture: As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, till he shows us his mercy (Psalm 123:2).
