“Break camp and move on”
The first generation of Israelites who came out of Egypt received the promise of God but could not possess it. It was an 11-day journey from Egypt to the promised land: “It takes eleven days to go from Horeb to Kadesh Barnea by the Mount Seir road” (Deuteronomy 1:2), but the Israelites’ disobedience to the Lord caused them to wander for 40 years in the desert. After 40 years, when it was time to cross into the promised land, the first thing the Lord told Israel was this: “You have been traveling around this mountain country long enough. Turn northward” (Deuteronomy 2:3). In another verse He puts it differently: “It is time to break camp and move on” (Deuteronomy 1:7, NLT).
The only thing Israel was familiar with was the mountain; they had circled it for 40 years, but the Lord’s call to them was to break out of the familiar. Cyclical patterns keep us out of new seasons God has prepared for us. In the kingdom of God acts of faith propel us forward; continuing with the familiar puts no demand on our faith. If the Holy Spirit is stirring your spirit to break out of the familiar, take courage; you are being set up to possess your promise. God in Christ has not called us to live in cyclical patterns but to cross over into the new season He has prepared for us.
Declaration: Today I choose NOT to align my life with what is familiar to me but, at God’s word, I choose to let go of the familiar and to align my life to this new season.
Scripture: “…but at Your word, I will let down the nets” (Luke 5:5)
